How to Find the Skull of Martha Jane in Sea of Thieves | The Seabound Soul Tall Tale

April 2023 · 5 minute read

The Seabound Soul Tall Tale is available outside of the main Shroudbreaker questline. In it, you follow Sir Arthur Pendragon's orders, who was tricked and slain by Captain Graymarrow. Before he died, Graymarrow forced him to explain how to trap souls, which Graymarrow used on Pendragon himself! Pendragon was bound to a portrait in his ship's Captain's Quarters on Shipwreck Bay. That is where we're headed to begin this quest.

Sea of Thieves | The Seabound Soul Tall Tale | How to Find the Skull of Martha Jane

Before we begin, this section of the guide will cover how to start the quest and complete the first task of finding Martha Jane's skull. If you have already found it and are instead looking for another section of the guide, you can find them linked in the list below. Alternatively, if you're looking for the Hidden Journals and Artifacts, you can find their links also listed below.

HIDDEN JOURNAL LOCATIONS: When you start this adventure, you might notice in your Pirate Log that one of the Commendations associated with it is for finding all the Hidden Journals. You must have the Seabound Soul Tall Tale active to find these Journals! As such, it is best to look for them along the way as you visit the islands in your iteration of the Tall Tale. Follow the link above to get the guide to locating these Hidden Journals.

Getting started with this quest can be a bit confusing because Pendragon doesn't provide great instructions initially. However, what he does provide is an Enchanted Lantern! This will be your most essential tool to complete this Tall Tale. Let's start this guide with how to start the adventure.

Step One: Starting The Seabound Soul

To begin this seabound Tall Tale, you'll need to set your sails and point your mast toward Shipwreck Bay. You've likely visited this island many times before, as it's a popular spot for Voyages. You've undoubtedly also seen the large shipwreck on the east half of the island. We're headed to that shipwreck to meet Sir Arthur Pendragon.

You'll want to park off the eastern coast of the island as you approach. Walk onto the beach and clamber your way up the massive shipwreck into the Captain's Quarters. In here, you'll find a haunting portrait of Pendragon in front of his old desk. On his desk lies the Quest Book! Interact with it to begin the adventure!

Pendragon will regale his story of how he ended up as a Portrait. You can choose whether or not to listen, but ultimately, you'll need to go back to your Ship and equip your lantern to get started.

Step Two: Follow the Trail of Ships

If you have already done the Fate of the Morningstar Tall Tale, you'll have a general idea of how the Enchanted Lantern works. When it's lit, it will illuminate spirits and ghosts around you. In this situation, you will be using it to follow the trail of three ships, and one of them is the Ashen Dragon.

As you pursue the ships, you might notice a few things. First, they point toward the next scene that you need to follow. If at any point you can't seem to find where to go, simply return to the previous scene and look the way the Ship's bowsprits are pointed.

This is the point in the Tall Tale that you could be led to one of several possible islands. Generally, you'll be sailing East of Shipwreck Bay, so you will likely land on one of the smaller islands in the Devil's Roar. The below are the currently known possible endpoints for this part of the adventure.

The image above is what you'll see when it's time for you to stop. If you remember, Pendragon mentioned that you'd be looking for three souls to recover. The first shipwreck is where the first soul will be located. Park your Ship near the bowsprit sticking out of the water, and dive!

In the water below, you will see something similar to the image above. The shipwreck is big, so you will need to keep your eyes open all around it to spot characters that drowned with it. There might be more than one of these, but you'll be looking for a character with a captain's hat that is slowly falling into the seafloor. This is Captain Martha Jane.

Martha Jane sinking into the seafloor.

Once you have found her, you need to look at where she lands. On the seafloor will be her skull. Once you have found her spirit, the skull is usually easy to spot, but you can also try searching for it without the Enchanted Lantern. The familiar glint of key objects should reveal its location. Grab the skull and take it up to the surface.

Pendragon will be on the island's beach, calling you to bring Martha Jane's skull to him. When you hand it over, he will take it and perform an incantation to release the soul. You now have freed the first of three souls! With it comes more pages for your Quest Book and a new task to pursue the ships that are still afloat.

What's Next

The pages added to your Quest Book will provide an image of an island and some subtle clues that help you begin your search for the next skull. The clue for the next island seems like it will be the image, but it's actually in the text! We will cover that in the guide's next section: How to Find Randal Stone's Skull.
